Frequently Asked Questions

IS PSYCHOTHERAPY CONFIDENTIAL?

The psychotherapy service I offer is confidential. Your identity and personal details will always be protected. No information will be disclosed to anyone without your written permission. The only exception I will make is if I judge that there is a serious risk to you or others (including children) or if I am obliged to do so by law.

Scottish law and my professional ethics require psychotherapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:

  • If there is an intention to harm yourself, I will make every effort to enlist your cooperation in ensuring your safety and if needed, I will take further measures without your permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure your safety, including contacting your GP.
  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If there is a threat of serious bodily harm to another person/s (including terrorist activity), I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.

In the rare event that I break confidentiality I will contact only those people who absolutely need to know.

At your initial session, I will give you a ‘Statement of Understanding’ which includes our confidential disclosure agreement, as well as other arrangements for therapy.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE INITIAL CONSULTATION?

The initial consultation provides an opportunity for us to meet and explore the issues that have lead you to seek help, how these issues impact on your life, your expectations and whether the services I offer can help you.

My aim in this first session is to gain not only an understanding of the issue or issues that you wish to address but a sense of what part these play in your life as a whole. We will assess how you have coped with these issues in the past, your physical, psychological and emotional resources, your responsibilities, the support available to you and your hopes for the future.

This initial meeting offers us both an opportunity to see how we work together. This is a two way process. It is essential that you have confidence in your psychotherapist if you are to get the most out of your sessions. If I think that the services I offer cannot provide the help you need, time will be given to explaining the reasons and alternatives will be suggested wherever possible. If we decide to proceed together, arrangements for future
appointments will be agreed during the initial consultation.

If you decide the services I offer will meet your needs, I will give you a statement of understanding. This is a written agreement which includes practical arrangements such as timing and frequency of sessions, fees, payment arrangements, confidentiality etc. I will also at this point ask you to give consent for me to keep written confidential records of our sessions. These notes help me to reflect between sessions on the work that we are doing together and provide a record of the work that we do together. I comply with the Data Protection Act; all records are kept in a locked filing cabinet and confidentially shredded by me after 7 years.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT YOU ARE PROPERLY QUALIFIED?

I am fully qualified psychotherapist, accredited by both the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy  and BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy ). Both these professional associations, are regulated by the Professional Standards Authority for Health & Social Care.

About 1 in 5 people have consulted a counsellor or psychotherapist and almost half of us know someone who has, soit may come as a surprise that literally anyone can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist.

In 2016, in an attempt to bring clarity to the psychotherapy and counselling professions, to the public and to commissioning services, the six most recognised professional associations which regulate the training and standards of psychotherapists and counsellors, came together to create a framework to differentiate the scope of practice for counselling and psychotherapy.

The framework they used (known as SCoPEd) used an evidence-based process of mapping existing competence frameworks, professional standards and practice standards to:

  • Identify areas of overlap and areas of difference between counselling and psychotherapy
  •  Align their membership categories to reflect the SCoPEd framework
  • To develop a shared agreement on training and accreditation pathways

From 2026 when the SCoPEd framework will be fully implemented, only psychotherapists registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), will be legible to use the title Psychotherapist. As a UKCP registered psychotherapist, I already meet all the ScoPEd requirements and can continue to use that title .

The SCoPEd partner organisations are:

  • Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC)
  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
  • British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)
  • Human Givens Institute (HGI)
  • National Counselling Society (NCS)
  • United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

Collectively, the SCoPEd partners represent approximately 75,000 counsellors and psychotherapists from a diverse range of backgrounds, approaches, philosophies, and professional training. Other organisations exist with radically different registration and accreditation requirements, with a number being
founded by practitioners who are unhappy with the SCoPEd framework and the differentiation of counsellors and psychotherapist on the basis of training and competencies.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH IS THE RIGHT THERAPY FOR ME?

I am trained and experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches so I am able to think about your difficulties and issues from different perspectives and will discuss with you which therapeutic intervention will best meet your individual needs and your personal preferences.

I only work within my area of training and expertise, if I believe that you would benefit more from a form of therapy that I do not offer, I will tell you and where possible suggest appropriately qualified and registered psychotherapists, specialist services or agencies who may be able to assist you.

WILL PSYCHOTHERAPY, CBT OR COUNSELLING HELP IF I AM ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS OR OTHER PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION?

Talking therapy (including psychoanalytic psychotherapy, CBT and counselling) can be undertaken at the same time as medication and some other forms of medical treatment and is likely to support the process of recovery from mental illness. If you are currently taking medication or receiving any other form of psychiatric treatment or have a history of significant mental illness, I may suggest that we discuss discuss your treatment with your psychiatrist or GP. In such circumstances, any communication with your medical practitioner, will only be done with your consent and where this communication is in writing, you will receive a copy of any letters written beforehand.

Talking therapy (including psychoanalytic psychotherapy, CBT and counselling) is not a substitute for medication, and you are urged not to stop taking any medication without medical supervision.
